I want to paint the brake drums on my car black. They were pretty rusty, but after a good amount of work I was able to all the surface rust off.

However there is still a lot of pitting. I was thinking about applying a few coats of rust bullet and then some black paint.

Will the rust bullet be okay on the drums or would there be to much heat?

Mopar painted a few drums red in the 60s. As I recall, it was only a ring about 1½ inches high, just outside of the lug studs. Seems like a reasonable thing to do with the black paint as you propose. Personally, I'd want to keep paint away from the fins or ribs on the drums as it will promote heat retention.

I removed a lot of black paint from the 4 drums on my 69 Swinger, and the red "rings" you describe were clearly visible. I didn't take any pix of it because I didn't realize it could have been a factory mark.
The paint resembled red primer, and was crudely applied.
Thanks for the lesson.
