People suck

Update...I found every part under the sun at Carlisle EXCEPT a late Duster fender. :wtf: I found at least five RIGHT fenders. I found a Demon fender. I found Volare fenders. I found B and E-body fenders. I found a Daytona fender. I found a 71 Duster fender. Heck, I found SBP 17" wheels! By Saturday afternoon, I felt like I was in an SNL routine. (When SNL was actually still funny.) So...still working on that. Might need to fix mine, I just thought I'd have an easier time finding another one.

Insurance, of course, lowballed me. Need to get an estimate from an actual shop instead of the insurance adjuster.

Unfortunately no video-it was a truck dash cam, they overwrite every ~6 hours, and I didn't notice the damage for at least 10.

When I hit a deer with my BMW, I was surprised and impressed by the speed with which GEICO got back to me with an estimate, a check, and an unending series of e-mails and texts to please approve their offer and take their money.

I was even more impressed by the fact that their estimate looked like a fraction of what I knew the cost would be.

So I got a reference from a local independent BMW shop, went by the body shop, talked to the guy, told him I wanted all factory parts, he said No Problem, the local adjuster is great and he's got a good relationship with him, and he'd take care of it.
I was a little bit concerned that he'd do the ol' trick and take it 'round behind the shop and back the tow truck into it a few times to get a better estimate, but he didn't do that, and, after a suitable amount of time, the car was done and was, essentially, perfect, with all the appropriate parts replaced with new.

So, if you've got the coverage, consider going through a reputable shop. I never pay anyone to do anything for me, and I was glad I did.

Oh, I'm going to. I just couldn't right away, because HE was also at Carlisle and will be quite busy for the next few days.

I know shipping sucks these days, but I know PirateShip can help reduce the cost, may be slooow to get to You. There are Members here that have lots of fenders for sale, did You try the search function in the Exterior Parts for Sale forum here?? I don't know everything that sets a 'late model' Duster fender apart by year...what is the span of interchange,...'73-'76??

AFAIK, yes, 73-76 Duster. I don't think a Valiant/Scamp fender will work, and I know a Dart Sport fender will NOT.

Shipping is insane. FL to MA was over $200. Pirate Ship might be worth a try, or Granger. Sadly, Greyhound no longer does shipping.

Yeah wife hit a deer with her Mustang and I wanted a color match fender. I found one for $150 in Georgia but I swear till shipped it was 350 or 500 I dont remember they crated it up etc it costs $$$ I guess building a shipping pallet and the guy doing it gets $30 an hour plus the truck fee etc. alot goes into it money wise. But at 10 feet ya cant tell other than the SVT COBRA emblem is on a 6 cyl base coupe LOL! she keeps saying she wants the original emblem back I may take the Cobra and make a tool box magnet out of it. We drove that car to Delaware and some idiot in a Vette wanted to race us on RT 1 they couldnt tell it wasnt a Cobra LOL!

Just the damn shipping from NC to here is $237. Not labor or crating, just the postage!

In a way there's labor as the person loading and unloading the truck is being paid as well as the driver who is making the delivery and it's the postage fee is what pays for this.

I certainly can't. I give up.

Yes, hit and run.
The people of today do not respect classic cars or care about anyone else, it's all ego. I was almost run off the road on the 60 to 215 merge by of all things... a Dodge truck while in my 67 Plymouth. He even raced up to cut off.. then realized inwasnt giving it up..so he cut 2 cars ahead from the shoulder. As soon as it became the 215 and I got into the no.2 lane... I flipped him the bird and and flew past him

I had read or heard that some people think having a classic car is a luxury so there are idiots who think us car people are rich or something and they cop a "against the man" attitude. I'm not rich and its taken me years to get my car where its at I just didn't give up is the difference.

It’s because people spoil their kids where the children either feel entitled (spoiled) or live without accountability because they didn’t have parents that would WHIP THAT ***. Two times I had a beater driver’s side door get blown into the next car and I owned up to the victim. They were so gracious they let me off Scott-free again when at an (foreign to me) intersection used by semi’s I pulled up to the line, which was not enough to avoid a turning semi- (it was clear when I looked 20-40 seconds prior) but that truck was going to hit me and I backed up into a new model charger. I had insurance but I was distraught-I owned up to the Charger owner and he let me off (didn’t even dent his license plate).

We see videos now of road rage (men without dad’s to teach them boundaries and behavior) and I bet that they were terrified of confrontation-which doesn’t excuse leaving the seen of an accident!

Can you get another hood from a member here?

I think the community could search and coordinate for you. Best wishes!

If I may add one more, perhaps psychoanalytic, point:

In my experience, this degree of frustration and all-or-nothing thinking points to an unconscious perfectionist mindset.

"If it's not perfect, I don't want it."

This way of looking at things can act like a straightjacket [bonus psych. reference] on life, preventing a person from actually doing anything.

"Why do it if you don't do it right?"
"I can't do that because a professional can do it better."
"I'll never do that because I'll never be good enough to do it."
"I screwed it up, I'll drop it / throw it away / give up / throw a hammer through the windshield because it will never be good enough."
"Why not wreck it / sell it – It'll never be perfect."
"This vacation is ruined by the rain / missing that flight / losing that suitcase / your constant bitching at me – I'm going home."

Once you recognize that urge to perfection somewhere inside what's left of your brain, and you can see it acting in different places, you can fight against it and see that it makes no sense, maybe even see where it comes from (was Dad always telling you what was wrong with things you did? How about your first grade teacher?).

Nothing is perfect. At least nothing that you can afford. Everything's got something at least a little bit wrong with it. It's just a matter of how much you can tolerate before it bothers you. The ancient Muslims used to introduce a small mistake into some part of their elaborate patterned tilework, mosques, carpets, etc., on the principle that "Only God is perfect" (which is actually pretty damn arrogant, if you ask me, assuming that they could make something completely perfect, but whatever).

Once you get to where you can distinguish between "perfect" and "good enough" you tend to be happier.

Most body shop guys I know ARE LIKE THAT!!!

Perfection or it’s not worth doing.

A lot of alpha males I knew were like that and reactor technicians and other high stress rates/(MOS’s) where perfection is not an option, it is the only thing acceptable. Those men had billionaire-CEO drive and anal-retentive attention to detail. GOD help you working for them, I did for 20 years and hate perfection in most categories of my life because of the stress ( I wasn’t as good as them-{ADHD} as consistently, for as long as they could be perfect.)
But don’t kid yourself, there truly are assholes and artists that LIVE perfection, they just are not everyday people that have to tolerate imperfection.

@MDchanic I completely agree with your mindset/approach!
