Im swapping in a 8.8 rear end and need to set up the pinion angle, I've always heard equal but opposite so if the trans was 3 degrees down the the pinion would be 3 degrees up. Then I've read to add or subtract up to 5 degrees but think 2 degrees would be ok for a street car? So if trans was 3 down as an example then pinion would be 1 up?

Get a copy of the Mopar Performance Suspension manual ninth edition. It's all in there.

Whatever the transmission is up.. you want the same on the pinion but down, the pinion no more than 2° or 4° for hot street.. as much as 6° for drag racing.

Your math is correct if you want a 2* pinion angle. The way I think about it is make the transmission and pinion parallel, then roll the the pinion down however many degrees to want the pinion angle to be. For leaf springs, 2-4* is fine.

Your pinion angle should be 2 to 3 degrees down from parallel to the trans angle. For your application.
