piston to valve

If I was to take a hydraulic roller(stock)and lock or jam the plunger in the highest position will this act the same as a solid lifter for piston to valve clearance check?The reason I'm asking is we are about 5 hours North of Edmonton and I would like to install my new roller this week when I am off,also has anyone ever made a valve relief cutter?Been successful?

If you can lock the plunger than yes. But you still need to use some light weight checking springs.
