Play in door latch/striker pin?

For my 1970 dart swinger - Is there supposed to be play in the door latch when the door is closed/engaged in the striker pin? I don't currently have the door gaskets installed and the door sits flush with the quarter panel when I pull the door as if opening it but if I push it closed it gets pushed past being flush by about .25-.5 of an inch, making it difficult to do body work on the quarter panel/door lines.

Do I need to install the door gasket to keep it flush while doing body work or is there an issue with the door latch?

Yes, stick the gasket or any door stops back in there pull it before you prime.

Or just block the doors in place against the striker from the inside.
