Is it ok for me to paint POR-15 over a surface that's already been primed?

I know you can paint it over rusted metal or bare metal with the acid treatment but can't find anything about painting it onto primed metal. The underside of my car was primed and seam sealed after it was sandblasted, I'm definitely not too keen on scraping all that off.

No, use over rusty metal only after properly degreasing and prepping per instructions.

I've been painting it on bare metal without an issue, says right on the can you can do it. Been trying to follow instructions it just goes over everything EXCEPT primer.

Hows it holding up riddler?

It's an epoxy type paint. Holding up great. I've hit it with a hammer and it does chip or mark. I've done a few cars under carriage after they have primed. No issues.

Riddler

Outstanding, that's what I needed to hear. I'm not using it for the rust conversion properties except on the K member, I want it for the toughness of it.

Wear a good respirator mask. The freaking fumes (Can & Will Knock You For A Loop )

Oh I learned that one the hard way haha, painted the K frame in the basement with my respirator on but that didn't go over well with the rest of the household. :pain10:

Yes you can but you are giving up the real benefits provided by POR-15.

From the instructions.

WHAT IS THE “PROPER PREPARATION”?

If you are sandblasting, blow off the lose dust and apply directly over
the surface. On all other bare metal or rusted surfaces use the Marine
Clean and Metal Ready preps for proper adhesion. Metal Ready It is a
rust remover that leaves a zinc phosphate coating on base metal, the
perfect pre-primer for POR-15. Areas that have been previously painted
should be cleaned with Marine Clean and then lightly scuffed with 400
grit sandpaper. Keep in mind when POR-15 is applied over another
coating it will not prevent against rust long term but will serve as a
durable, moisture resistant coating.
NOTE: New steel is coated with a
protective oil fi nish at the mill. This finish must be removed before using
POR-15.

X2... You are wasting a very expensive paint if you are applying it over primer... Any good chassis paint will hold up ok if the metal was prepped well before you primed it. Why not save the POR 15 for another "rusty area" which is what it was designed for... Just my 2 cents... BTW I have seen POR 15 PEEL big time off of smooth metal, not sure if it was prepped properly or not. It does VERY well on rough rusty surfaces, best I have used so far.
