Will a Power Lok differential, currently in a 742 case work in a 489 case assuming of course you use the 489 ring and pinion?

If so, are the differential side bearings the same?

Thanks,

CE

Take the side bearings and races from the 742 to the 489. Don't mix up the races, keep them with the bearing they ran in. Should work fine.

IIRC the pinion and bearings are dependent on the case series, carrier bearing are the same.

All the cases use the same OD size on the cups but the earlier carriers do use a smaller diameter fit on the bearing cone but that should not be an issue since you're moving everything into the newer style case. If you do get the cups mixed up, you'll be ok so long as they do not exhibit excessive wear. If they do show a lot of wear, it'll be a good idea to just buy new bearings. If the cones show minimum wear and you're not sure about the cups, you can purchase new cups separately. Timkens will not be packaged as a matched set anyways unless you buy a kit.
