I have a 73 Dart Sport with a power steering leak. I know very little about power steering, and I need some help. The leak looks higher up, as in not at the pump. Can I get some info on what parts are what, common leak areas, what the problem might be, and how to fix it? Pictures of the assembly\/ \/ \/

Have someone turn the steering wheel left & right with the car running while you're under the hood or under the car looking. The P/S system will be pressurized and maybe help you determine where it's leaking from.

Good Luck.....I hate leaks too!!!

Clean outer casting of the steering gear with degreaser, and then run the car for a bit. Once all has been cleaned, one will be able to see where the leak is.

Chances are good that both the upper seal where steering column connects, and lower seal at pitman arm end of the gear are worn. These seals are available from Rock Auto. However chances are good that the whole unit is badly worn, and needs to be rebuilt.

i had a leak right around the collar where the shaft goes into the box. i took a big hammer and screwdriver and carefully tapped on the the big ring with the slots in it to tighten it and it stopped. the fitting that your high pressure lines run to and from also have an O ring and gasket that get old and leak.

Lucas is your friend... Unless of course you we want to fix it right.. But Lucas power steering leak stop does work for a temporary band aid...

The common areas for leaks are: upper (input) seal, lower (pitman) seal, control valve "O" rings, pressure and return hoses, loose upper cover/lock ring, pump seals and "O"rings, and bad filler cap.....not necessarily in that order. I've had good luck with the Lucas stop leak too on a temperary basis. If you have any slop in the box, I'd replace it as a unit.
