Right now I'm roughing in a set of Pro Parts RB A-Body headers. Keep in mind that these are the "old" ones, I bought an unused set on ebay because I had heard how well they fit.

I was a little apprehensive about cutting the fenderwells, but....

I assembled them on a bare 440 on an engine stand first, and everything went together with little headache. Just be sure to take a small grinding bit to deburr the edges of the pipes and and clean the welding slag out of the collectors, or they won't go on very well.

I carefully cut out the fenderwells exactly as directed, and installed the empty 440 in the car...and the headers wouldn't come close to going in. I had to fit and trim several times, and in order to get them in and out without scraping everything up when they're coated, I had a much larger hole on each side than the templates showed.

Passenger side still needs trimmed closer to the firewall...

Drivers side also. It's almost as if the firewall edge on the templates were too far forward...

The driver's side will need "adjusted" to keep from hitting the shock tower...

The driver's side hits the bolt on the steering column with every turn of the wheel...

The passenger side problems are under the car. The collector hits the crossmember...

Which causes the collector to stop short of going onto the pipes as far as they should...
(sharpie marks show where they assembled on the stand)

And the tabs on the collectors should be on the outside tubes of the headers,
not here...where they will interfere with the transmission clearance.

The car has Schumacher A to B/RB swap mounts in it. The engine is level in the car. Raising it about 3/8" would help the driver's side problems, but would exaggerate the clearance problem of the collector on the passenger side.

Soooo...today I stopped at a welding shop and bought a foot of 3" X 1/4" bar stock. Tomorrow night I'll cut it and drill it for spacers. I called Schumacher and they said 1/4" thick was fine, but if I need and want to raise the engine 1/2" total that I should split the spacers: one between the bracket and pad, one between the mount and pad. Hopefully that will take care of the driver's side issues.

For the passenger side I'm gonna have to take the collector to a muffler shop, and have it cut, lengthened, and re-oriented so it comes out close to where the driver's side is.

A guy from another forum who uses a set of these said that he cut the little tabs off of all the collectors and just had the collectors welded to the main, two-pipe sections (cylinders 3-5 and 2-4) that install from the bottom on each side. He's run them for 19 years like that with no problems, so it sounds good to me...

Like Dad always said...if you can date it or drive it, you're gonna have problems with it...

I have the same headers on my 67, a real pain in the a$$.
Some of the things I did to ease the pain.
On the pass side I used a 4" hole saw to put the whole in the fender well. I made a cover to dress it up after header was installed.
Drives side was trial and error untill I got the clearence needed. Where that tube is hitting the shock tower the metal has to go, I trimed that out also with a cover. Hint the drivers side is going to hit the pitman arm, it will have to be dented for clearence before final install.
My header collectors did not have the flange on them so clearence at the trans cross member was not an issue.
Last of all as you slide all this together use a LOT of anti siese compound when sliding all these tubes together.
I also had to eliminate the stock steering coupler.
I wish you well, at least for me the I'm satisfied with the finished product.

Thought about covers for the holes also, now that I've seen them that looks great!

Thanks for the heads-up on the clearance issues, I think most of mine on the driver's side will go away when I raise the motor a little. I'll be sure to check the pitman arm clearance, hopefully I'll have all the "extra" work done to them so I won't have to beat on them after they're coated...

Your car looks great, I see a lot of cool stuff going on underhood....
