The torqueflight 904 tranny in our 64 barracuda will only go in reverse. I've adjusted the gear shift cable at the transmission about 4 times, and it's usually barely in gear, or fully in gear when i start the car but always in reverse. the book says five notches when adjusting, and I can't figure out what's wrong. any ideas, or adjustment instructions? tells me to hold reverse button in while adjusting.

also, has 360 out of a 74 dart, would that affect the linkage?

most likely, but i really don't know for sure. we got this car half built from a family member. engine and tranny professionally rebuilt, and installed, just not hooked up. We had to put all the linkage on.

engine appears to have spacers and what not for the engine swap

That spacer is commonly overlooked since it is a modification required when using the early transmission with a later engine.

youll chase you tail for days that way... easier to pull the neutral safety switch out and adjust it to neutral...

what do you push buttons do when you try to activate them?

sounds like something is not connected correctly, who hooked the cable to the transmission & or the shifter?

you need to verify the cable is correctly mounted-- do you have a tech manual -- it has diagrams-- very delicate connection at the tranny.

I've been using a large manual that told me how to precisely hook up the shift linkage. I hooked it up and have redone it 3 or 4 times. when i hit the drive button or 2nd or 1st button, it stays in reverse

What manual? hopefully not a chiltons, the 62 manual has a lot more detail than just the 5 turns-- still might not be adjusted correctly -- if all the other connections are correct.

does the shifter buttons move when the car is not running?
if you are depressing the other buttons & it stays in reverse something is wrong/ broken.
you will physically have to inspect:
the cable
the attaching points at the shifter
& the tranny.

you are at the vehicle-- the info given is sparse at best.

when you re-attached the cable to the tranny--

did you actually move the lever inside the tranny to different shift points?
time for a pan drop & visual inspection.

it's actually an old service manual from 1966. it has about 6 pages on this tranny alone, and 6 steps on installing the cable, and a seperate 6-8 steps on adjusting it.

and yeah, the buttons can all be pushed while the car is off. including the park lever.

i'll try to find another usable shop manual more specific to just this tranny, or similar...

1966?-- push buttons were gone that year,, 1965 is a 1 year only tranny style, it can be made to work with the 1964 & prior cars.

What I'm saying is the 66 manual might be giving instructions for a 1965-- yours is 1964 & they might be different.

i have a 62 manual & see if I can post the instructions--- should be the same as your 1964.

really need to see if Charlie S will chime in-- he is well versed in these trans styles,
Lawrence

true, but the manual has literally everything from the fifties, and runs all the way through 1966. as thick as a large phone book. but I do doubt it's accuracy in this case.

any other instructions would be greatly appreciated, i would love to try every suggested hook-up until it works.
