So the '74 Duster I'm working on has NO ignition switch left. What was once there is now a mangled mess, complete with the screwdriver in place and everything.

I was thinking of installing a push-button type starter switch and just mount it on the dash - what do you think? Would I wire this just like I do when I'm using my remote starter switch? One lead to the top of the solenoid, the other lead to the bottom? Or would that fry my starter solenoid?

And then there's the issue of how to turn it off.....yeah - just thought of that.

What would you suggest?

I'm just aiming to get the car up and running. Likely headed out as just a drag car - so it doesn't need to be anything factory correct or anything - although that might be the fastest/easiest way to manage it.

Any ideas?

If that's what you really want to do....................

First, has it been rewired, or just hacked up? "The simple answer" is to hook a button to a hot feed such as what feeds the ignition switch, and hook the other terminal to the yellow start wire.

This wire only went one place (EXCEPT) --from the ignition start contact, out through the bulkhead, and to one of the two terminals on the start relay.

So do you have a stick or auto? If auto you SHOULD retain the factory start relay, as this ties in the neutral safety switch.

Now the EXCEPT is if the car had the factory seat belt interlock. This was a box similar to a horn relay, under the hood, with a reset button. If you have this, cut the two "yellowish" wires and hook them permanently together

Toggle switch to ground the coil...car off.

It won't kill your power feeds though.

Hot tip: late-model fuseblock with auto shutdown relay and all the goodies.

Can you not put in a new OEM switch?

Swap meet/JY column shift columns can be had with keys for $20-$30 sometimes.

I've got a spare steering column with a good switch. Even has a half decent Grant wheel on it $25 plus the ride.
