Anyone here know much about Cummins powered Dodges? I am looking at starting to transport cars more than I already do and found a 92 Cummins 5spd 4x4 with 290K for $3700. It has a new injector pump. Anyone have any suggestions? Good buy or not? The truck is in pretty decent shape, but has been used around the farm. The body is straight and rust free and the interior isn't even in bad condition. Thanks for any help.

I don't, I just went and looked at it a few miles from here. Sound like a fair price?

Its a 4x4 reg cab. I don't know much about all the air stuff. I didn't lift the hood either. It is the first gen, 90-93 style. I just wanted to get some advice before I go test drive it or anything. I will call him and try to go test drive it tomorrow.

the Dodges are known for ball joint problems so look over the front end and see how the tires look like they are wearing.

The air to air cooler is in front of the radiator, the turbo out let hose should go to it then the other side will go to the engine intake manifold.

Themileage is getting up there a ways but the price seems OK. Did you do a kbb.com search?

Look at the diesel resource sight I posted on my previous posting.

those 12 valves are hard to kill. Theres a cummins diesel forum that is humongus called appropriately cummins diesel forum

92 was the first year for them to be inter cooled. so as far as the 1st gens go 92 or 93 are the ones to get. good trucks. they have a dana 60 front, which is a kingpin front end, and most of em are usually loose steering unless recently rebuilt. easy to work on and turn up.

i love 12 valves. the only downside with the 12 valves is that they are mechanically controlled (which is what is also nice about them.) the 98 1/2 and up 24 valves are computer controlled and can be turned up and down from in the cab, for better mileage or more power, depending on mood and what your doing.

also the tranny is kinda week. its a getrag, and the newer ones have the NV's which are way better. although some will argue that a getrag is just fine.

My dad got one of the first gen Cummins, brand new back in about 90 I think. He has well over 250k trouble free miles.

We did rebuild the steering coupler once but the rest has been normal maintenance.

the first question I would ask is, why was the injector pump replaced? Is the lift pump bad? Was it also replaced? A lot of those injector pumps fail because the lift pump has already failed. The injector pump is doing twice the work if the lift pump is shot. It will fail again and is costlier than a lift pump.
Other than that, I'd say it's a fair price if the body is straight.
