I just got my Dana 60 back from being narrowed down to 50 inches and hot tanked and I was curiuos if anyone has any input on the best type of paint to use. Something very durable????

If you got money for durability you could always consider powder coating! I haven't had much luck with rattle cans on anything. But you could always try the bedliner-in-a-can stuff. (Well, that's my name for it).

I might try black POR-15 and then top coat it with rattle can black. I've gone that route in the past and color held up just fine.

POR is really good stuff, just make sure to scuff any smooth spots with some coarse grit before painting, otherwise it will peel itself right off.....ask me how I know lol

shouldnt have to worry about POR fading or anything by itself since it will be on a rear end it wont see sunlight. POR does not have any UV protection.

Powdercoat would be the best in my opinion.
Check around locally for a metal fab bussiness that also powdercoats.
Most times these guys have ovens large enough to do whole truck frames.
I have one local to me that builds entry gates, industrial racking etc.
As long as I want black it is no big deal (changing colors, cleaning the gun) they just piggyback my small orders in with the larger orders, with no oven costs.
Powdercoating is not as $$$ as some may think.
A quick GOOGLE search in your area will give you some #'s, a few calls will give you an idea of what is available, local 4x4 guys usually are in the know.

I used "Miracle Paint" (same as por-15 but cheaper) and rattle canned it with rustoleum for UV protection. Two winters on a 4x4 and it looks fine and it just sprays clean in the car wash.

a cheap paint gun and some one step urethane black as for rattle can spray paint I have had good results with rustoleum industrial black

Krylon in the color of your choice. The paint on a rear end does not take much abuse (it just gets dirty).

Go buy 2 or 3 cans ($4.00 each). Easy to get, cheep, and you can touch it up any time you want.

This is what I have done for many years. Looks great.

People really over think and over spend on stuff like this.

I'm with S340 on this one. I'll go one step more and tell ya to spend a little extra and get that hi heat engine stuff in the cans. Grease, oil, or gas wont take it off. Good luck.

Thanks for the info guys I think I might go with the VHT high temp paint just so it resists any solvent or fluids.

Rustoleum semi gloss black. It takes long to dry, but is very durable. I will never use VHT again, I used the turquoise engine paint on my 440 3 years ago, its falling off, getting rusty, and turned white when I spilled antifreeze on it. Pure ****!! Very, very poor paint. Its not even resistant to antifreeze? I may as well have used some kids finger paints. I'm pissed if you can't tell.
I want to pull it and use some acrylic enamel like on my 273.

Eastwood Chassis Black Aerosol is pretty good stuff seems to be a lot more money now though.

I just use Rustoleum in my HVLP paint gun now

Wow! I had a whole different thought in mind when I saw the subject of this thread. lol

I am going the cheaper route. I have had great results using Rustoleum "hammered" paints. The stuff is tuff as nails. Since the rear is out of the car, you can buy a quart for about $15 or less and brush it on.
I brushed the entire underbody of my Duster with it and plan to do the rear axle and springs when I get to that point - soon I hope... I also did the front suspension components with it. I used black and gray just to give a little contrast with the parts.
