hey guys
i am looking for a stronger rear end for my 71 duster (i know right, who isnt)
could we make a sticky of what different rear ends would be a direct or almost direct bolt on?

would for instance the rear end from a jeep fit ?

i am also looking at a 66 fury station wagon...would that fit?

Or a list of Ford rangers (small ranger) 2 or four wheel drives, what years and what is best for our lite A Bodies and early A Bodies, I have seen some of these threads and try to read threw them but the info on things takes for ever if not imposable with out asking the board
I like this thought diymirage :glasses7:

Not sure about the non-Mopar stuff, but the Mopar list is completely useless. Junk. Garbage. Outside of what? It's not drum-to-drum. It's not flange-to-flange either. And, I can tell you from personal experience, that A-body 8 3/4's and A-body 7 1/4's are NOT the same width. The 7 1/4" is about an inch narrower drum-drum.

While this is not my list, I have confirmed the lengths of the A-body, 65-67 and 68-70 B, '65-69 C, E body, and even the '65-71 D100 8 3/4" measurements listed here from actual 8 3/4 rear axles in my possession.

These are actual drum-to-drum measurements for 8 3/4" rear axles.

A BODY
'66-'72= 57 1/8"

B BODY
'62-'63= 58 1/2" (And '64 Max Wedge)
'64 = 60 7/8" (Exc.Max Wedge)
'65-'67= 59 1/2"
'68-'70= 60 1/8"
'71-'74= 63"
'71-'73 wagon= 64 3/8"

C BODY
'65-'69= 61.75"
'70-'71= 63.0" (Chrysler & Fury)
'70-'73= 64 3/8" (and '69 wagon)

IMPERIAL
'65-'66= 61 15/16"
'67-'69= 62 5/16"
'70-'71= 59 3/4"
'72-'73= 64 9/16"

E BODY
'70-'74= 61 5/8"

A100
'65-'70= 61 3/4"

D100
'65-'71= 63 15/16"
'72-'74= 64 3/8"

And here are the housing flange-flange measurements

A BODY
'66-'72= 52 5/8"

B BODY
'62-'63= 53 1/4" (And '64 Max Wedge)
'64 = 55 5/8" (Exc. Max Wedge)

'67-'69= 57 3/8"
'70-'71= 54 3/4"
'72-'73= 59 5/8"

E BODY
'70-'74= 56 31/64"

A100
'65-'70= 56 3/4"

D100
'65-'71= 58 5/16"
'72-'74= 59 7/16"

F BODY
’76-’80= 54.34” (8 1/4 axle!)

As for the Duster, I'm using a '68-70 B body 8 3/4 in mine. The offset on my rear wheels matches the front pretty closely with that set up, but I'm running 275/35/18's up front and 295/35/18's out back. I don't think I'd want to go much wider than that though. Modern offset wheels work well with the 65-67 and 68-70 B rear, but anything longer than that would get tough to find the proper offset/backspace for.

so i guess if we go with this we need to decide how we measure it so we can all be on the same page

memike, the ranger rear ends you mentioned, are those direct bolt ins or do they requirer cutting and welding just like the ford 8.8 we allready have a sticky on?

also, maybe we could put a rough HP capacity on them so we can pick a rear end that fits our build?

The most useful measurement is wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface. That allows you to get the backspace figured out for your wheels. On the list I posted above, the "drum-to-drum" measurements are the same as mounting surface to mounting surface. Obviously for rear ends with disks you'd have to call it something different. :D

The only issue with that measurement is that it's not the easiest thing to actually measure.

Two straight edges and a tape is about the best way. Oh, and a second set of hands.

I have a B rear in mine with 10" wheels and 5.5" backspace. Just right.
