Just out of couriousity, has anyone evey felt there rear end housing after ....say a 30 mile drive ? I put a set of 4:30's in my 8 3/4 and after about 30 miles rolled under the car and felt the backside of the rear pumpkin and holy **** , nearly burnt my hand. they shouldn't get that hot should they. They are a 742 case powerloc ???

'Bout the last thing you would expect ain't it? Yeah, they generate heat, mostly from bearing friction. It's really not a problem at highway speeds unless you are running a really ridiculous ratio. The higher the number the more heat it will generate (pinion bearing friction), and the farther you drive it at high speeds the hotter it will get. Maybe that's why they need rear axle coolers in NASCAR.

Yeah, the 391's I was running were warm, but these 430's you can only hold your open hand on them for about 5 seconds before you have to let go ! damn
