Correct the pinion shaft diameter is different between each, the 741, 742, and 489. So to answer your question, no.

Can a SureGrip carrier move from a 742 to a 741 housing?

.............SG will interchange between all 8.75s......if theres a will theres a way.......i've seen 742s in a 489 case.......also the sleeve on the small pinion is supposed to let the 741 interchange with the 742 and vice versa but i've never tried....kim...........
