Seeing the Mecum cars got me wondering about the Red or Orange GTS Emblem.
Why are some Red or Orange and some Black.
Just curious.

Red.
I've yet to see a definitive reason when the two were used, some say big blocks got the red-trimmed ones and small blocks got black, some say originals were black and over-the-counter replacements were red; - but I have seen original exceptions to that rule.

IIRC

Grand Spalding GSS had a red center S and black outer letters.

My big block GTS was originally black and my 340 GTS was originally red, both 1968s both automatics both green. I changed the big block to red letters as I like them better on the GG1 dark racing green paint.

On another note, some people think I'm crazy but back in 70 I worked at a GoodYear store next to a Dodge dealer. On the 69 Swingers with the buldge hood if the 340 emblem was close to the front it was a 4 speed car and if the 340 was close to the windshield it was an automatic.

I have all 3 of the original emblems for my car as its a stripe delete car. They are red. I image red would oxidize to an orange-ish color.
