After some interesting conversations, I redone my air cleaner and made it bigger and full open. The distance from the inside wall of the box and the outside of the filter is 2 inches. After measuring the space on a 340 six pak T/A, it was 2.5 inches. So if 2.5" is good enough for a closed top 340, 2" is just right for a open filter top 318.
