Removing Freeze Plugs

Is there a special way to pull freeze plugs? I don't want to booger up the machined surface.
 
Not that I know of. I usually just get a flat head and try to knock them so one of the sides is facing me then just pull out. Never making contact with the block.
 
yep , me too big screw driver or pry bar hit one side rotating them and sometime use a
channel lock once they spin to pop them out.

This is how I was taught.......knock them 90 degrees sideways , and use a channel locks to pop them right out by grabbing the side.
Use the block to set the edge of your pliers jaw and they come out way easier than you'd think.
