Retaining wall drainage...

Just wondering what folks do for drainage when a retaining wall is built. Went by a home today that had a retaining wall built out of rail road ties....looked like the wall was pretty old....and had a waterfall running thru it....guessing nothing was done behind it for drainage purposes....

Around here we build a French drain behind and lower than the ground level in front of the wall to keep the water off of it. Our clay is hard on retaining walls.

4 inch perforated drain pipe at the bottom with Drain rock back filled against the ties

yep, french drain out of perforated pipe with stone or washed gravel to let water escape out pipe without putting pressure against wall
