Again....

April 1, 2014 marked my first day of full retirement (for the second time).
I first retired back in 2003. That lasted about a year, when my wife said I needed to find something to do. So I started the first of 3 (eventual) businesses.

During the past year I sold all three business. Two of them completely, and one I still hold a small interest in, but I'm no longer involved in the day to day operations. When I sold the main (first) business, I was asked to stay on for one year on a part time basis, as a consultant, and a liaison between the new owners and the old customers. I was asked to work 15 hours a week at the office or in the field, for which I was paid much more than I'm worth. lol

That year ended on Tuesday, April 1, 2014.

During this last year, my wife also retired. She was a grammar school teacher. I used the time over the last year to sell off some property in NJ, WV, and Ga. And purchase some property in Florida and Tuscany, Italy.

We purchased a Condo on Florida's gulf coast, and I also purchased a commercial building. It's an 8 bay shop. Two of the bays have lifts in them, two are walled off separate from the rest, and the other 4 are regular auto shop bays.

I've decided to take the 2 separated bays and convert them into my wood working shop. I've already moved much of my wood working equipment down there, but nothing is set up, yet.

I'm also moving one of my pick ups, are van, and my Swinger there. I'm leaving one pick up, and my wife's Toyota here in Ga.

Between the three properties, we will probably move around seasonally.
Since two of our children live in Florida, I have no doubt that we will be spending the holidays there.

For the "villa" in Tuscany,Italy, we've decided that a couple of scooters ( perhaps even "Vespas" and a small car will suffice. I'm actually considering a Fiat. lol I'm also looking at a number of other cars, including a small MB, and a Chrysler minivan (my first choice).

Anyway, presently life is a beach. ;)

Congrats !

Have you noticed that since you retired the 1st time that there isn't enough time to do everything you want to do.

Makes you wonder how you got along when you were working :)

congrats too. I decided last fall to officially retire also. I ' ve always had plenty to keep busy all my life. I did the things I wanted to do in life and lets just say it will never be written on my tombstone that Bill Barbee was a great businessman!! LOL I respect the fact you can afford what you have. I live on a " smaller" scale, but I thank the good Lord what what I have.
I just started this rant to say, I find it difficult to not bebusy most all the time, although I have no big desire to conquer all. I can't afford financially to work on projects that I like. if our economy/ hobby/ whatever allowed people to be more involved in their own car buying/ trades etc, life would be fine! LOL
funny thing is to me, back in the 60's. 70's , seems like I could buy a basket of horse apples and the next day someone can along and wanted them!!???? things got worse in the 90's and keeps going further to sh__ all the tome,,,,seems like!!?? LOL
maybe some of you guys that have retired hAVE SOME POINTERS!!???? no, i'm not interested in going back to a real job ,, working for some company or owner that doesn't give squart about anything except adding more millions to his purse at the expense of everyone else!!?????
long as I have garden full of vegies and a box of grits, life is good!!! LOL

Congrat's Frankie!!! I am just over a year away from full retirement myself. Don't want to wish my life away, but I can't wait for it. I don't see any villa's in Tuscany in my future, but I will be spending time each winter in Florida. I will have to drop in and visit you. Good luck to you and you wife in retirement!!!!

The door will always be open, Jack.
...though I am a little ticked that on your last trip through you didn't allow me to meet you in Savannah, and buy you lunch.

That's absolutely true! lol Last week, I was at the gym, for about an hour, and I got half a dozen phone calls, all of which were from retired friends wanting to do something... lol

Much too busy for work!

Thank you, and Congrats to you, too!

What we have put together for our retirement was nearly 4 years in the making. The property purchase (that I was able to sell off this past years) were made some time ago. One as early as 1972, when I was 22 years old. One of the decisions I made a long time ago was that I was going to leave each of my kids some money, and some property. There is other stuff to leave behind, too, but money and property to leave behind was the goal, along with being sure that Joyce would never have financial issues, after I'm gone.

It's seems I've reached that goal with a decent portfolio to leave them. Now the goal is to protect as much of it as I can from the tax collector, lol.

You have the right attitude when you said, long as I have garden full of vegies and a box of grits, life is good!!!" It really is that simple.

For now, it's time to have a little fun. I'm going to see a 62 Dodge pick up, later today. I'd love to be able to have a toy to play with in Florida (the Dart), and one here in Georgia, too.

Well, OK... You're forgiven. Next time, at least plan a few extra hours. I'll knock Rob in the head and drag him out with me. ;)

You're right.
I was just up in north Jersey last week. for a few days. Got there on Friday, left on Tuesday. Just wrapping up so business. probably not more than a couple of hours from your place. It rained the who time, until I left on Tuesday. lol
I will be up that way over the summer (I think). When I know the firm plans I'll ring your bell. I want to meet that Spitfire, too.

Congrats!!!! I'm thinking my retirement comes in a box. lol!

Congrats!!!! I'm thinking my retirement comes in a box. lol!

That's what my wife and kids said about me. I was always working to put away enough money away, just in case... My father had 13 brothers and sisters, and the guys all seemed to die off at about 50 yeas old. My father did, too. That's always been on my mind, and because of that I wanted to be sure that the family was covered. So far, so good.

Congratulations! I'm so glad to see a plan come together. Enjoy the fruits of your labor.....you deserve it. :thumleft:
