Hi All,

I'm attempting to rebuild a 489 rear end with new bearings and a crush sleeve eliminator. I'm re-using the old ring and pinion and the original pinion shim. Backlash is .0.009 to 0.010, a little high because I understand that's recommended for used gears.

I need some help reading the grease pattern. The drive side pattern seems unusual, as it's flat, not oval or curved much.

I don't see any noticeable wear on the ring or pinion, but I'm doing this job because the rear end had a whine. Can't recall if it was on accel or coast...

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Rob

I am assuming you used the same pinion depth shim with new bearings ? Did you load the ring gear when checking the pattern ? I am not really thrilled with the pattern, because I don't see a definite loaded spot on the drive side. But with used gears, you might not get a textbook pattern. I would clean the marks off, tighten up the backlash to .006 and look at it again.

Yes, I reused the old pinion shim. Also l did put a load on the carrier when i rotated the pinion. I'll try 0.006 and see how it goes. Thanks!

Usually if gears gave a whine they are not gonna get better. Like said above u probably won’t get a real good pattern. Did u check back lash b4 u took it apart?

No, didn't check it before, should have noted when whine occurred too... Was hoping the whine was the bearings...

This is the last one I set up, 742 housing with 4.56 gears for a street car.

Possibly if not many miles on it. Does it whine when accelerating ( pinion too close) or decelerating?(Pinion to far away.) Kim

Do u have pics of the pattern? Is there warranty on it?

Doubt there is a warranty. I had them setup years ago, but just got the car on the road under 200 miles. He never gave me a pic of pattern.

I did take the car back due to a drive line vibration and he said "you're rear gears are whining" I said you set them up and he then replied well aftermarket gears always whine... You have to find factory gears.. I just shook my head

I was going to try and re do it myself or find another shop.

That’s what u want to hear from the builder. Not!!! Good luck 2ya. It’s worth a shot to take some shim out. Do a pattern check first and post the pics here. Kim

Thanks, sir! I am probably going to swap the gears. 4.10 to a 3.23 to make it more hwy friendly
