does anyone know if the ring and pinion out of a 8.25 1999 jeep cherokee will fit in a 1973 8.25? they have the 3.55 gears which is exactly what i'm looking for. Thanks

Yes, the gears are the same but you can't swap the carriers. The 99 Jeep will have 29 spline axles to your 73 axle using 27 spline.

I don't think I would do a swap with used gears though. You will need to get the pinion depth and backlash pretty much the same as they were in the Jeep or risk having a noisey rear end.

used gears are great. just take the rear end to a competent differential place and get the depth and pattern set. (it is money well spent even with new gears.) setting up gears is a job i CAN do, but it sucks without the proper equipment.

i have a used set of 3.55 gears in my 65 B-cuda that came out of a 1999 Dakota, so its basically the same exact set up as yours. if you can get a sure grip, do it now, set it up once, and be done with it! i am putting a sure grip in mine next weekend!
