I have a 74 swinger with a slant 6 the car ran perfect up until last year when I got in a front end accident with the car now its hard to start because the starter keeps pulling back as soon as the motor goes to start and it runs like garbage if I retard the timing the starter stays on but then motor won't fire and if I advance it then the the starter rarely catches but the car will run. I have new wires, coil, cap and rotor but I swapped everything else to my 74 sedan when I had the accident for my wife to use as a new DD. This was not a minor accident as I had to replace the front frame rad inner fenders, bumper etc. the motor died out on impact so hitting the rad may have stalled it I keep the idle pretty low on my cars and it did also bend all the blades on my 7 blade fan (solid steel version for a/c) Don't have a lot of time to play with it so If I get some ideas hopefully I will have a better Idea of where to start I already tried swapping the carb as the original went on my sedan and the first replacement kept getting the floats stuck. Thanks for any help

I think it just hit the fan the back of the motor did hit the firewall when the frame bent (last owner replaced the floors and didn't reweld the frame I never thought to look)

slightly bent crank maybe.

Turn over by hand and just make sure it turns over with out a tight spot, don't confuse cam/valve spring resistance.
Also with remote start or screwdriver watch crank spin around to see if it's bent.
I'm thinking compression + bound/bent crank is too much for starter but thats worse case and easy to rule out 1st.
