Back in the day....when I was building engines, the hot topic of the hour was painting the lifter galley with Rust-Oleum to seal the metal and aid in oil run-off/return. Is this still considered a good practice, and does it hold up over time? Or does the paint eventually peel off.......I don't even want to think about that possibility! What's the best type of paint to use, and how applied? (brush or spray)? My engine machinist thinks this is an outdated practice and of little use on a street machine. I'd like some feedback from those of you who've tried it (or seen it done) and your impressions, especially if you've build racing engines.

Couldn't tell you if its still being done, but the paint used was Glyptal. Its used to paint armatures in electric motors. Hope that helps somewhat.

There are still quite a few builders that paint the inside of an engine. I never have, I always worried about it peeling off and plugging the oil pickup. But Caterpiller engines were always painted inside from the factory, so there is some merit to it.

A bunch of shops still do. I deburr and smooth things a little, but that's all I do really. Painting the inside is a chore really.
