Does anyone know of a shop in the Philadelphia area that shortens and resplines axles?

I shipped them from work, that way it was commercial to commercial, cheaper. Around $28 one way.

are you shortening them to put them in an A body with LBP?

My car is minitubbed so narrowing a truck rear. Not happy with the bare dana 60 (no axles or gears) it came with. Running 440 auto so 8 3/4 will be fine.

Could be a problem, all 8.75" Truck axles I know of are Pre-1974 (as far as I know 74 was the last year of the 8.75" in trucks). Pre-1974 Dodge trucks had a 5 on 5.5" Bolt Pattern. EXCEPT the 1974 Ramcharger & Trailduster, which came with the 5 on 4.5" Bolt pattern a year earlier than the Pickup Trucks.

1984 was the last rear for 5 on 4.5 on 1/2 ton trucks. I had an '81 van that was 5 on 4.5 for sure because it came with Warlock/lil red express steel slots that I put on my '73 Cuda

Complety false, I have never seen a dodge with an 5.5" pattern.
I have had the following tucks and they all had the 4.5" pattern with 8.75
56 dodge
69 dodge
71 dodge

The 56 Dodge had a Chrysler 9-5/8" Axle in it (the axle the 8.75" was based on in design) if it was the original rear. Those are 5 on 4.5" (dating back to the 1930's)

All 4WD 1/2 Ton Dodges 1974 and earlier (I forget when, sometime in the early 60's) are 5 on 5.5" pattern. Apparently the 2WD's were 5 on 4.5" (I had to look that up, not much of a 2WD guy. That's where I goofed up). 8.75"s were more common in the W100 (4WD) than they were in the D100 (2WD). You're more likely to find an 8.25" or 9.25" under a 2WD (but 8.75's were an option).

So keep that in mind when you pull a rear from a truck, the 4WD's ARE 5 on 5.5" up until 1974 (and in 1980 they went back to 5 on 5.5" on the 4WD's again) The change from 5 on 5.5" to 4.5" involved the changeover to the NP203 Full Time 4WD Transfer Case and its Unit Bearing Hubs with Drive Flanges (No Hubs/Lockouts). When they went back to Part Time 4WD in 1980, they reverted back to the 5 on 5.5" Pattern for the 4x4's again.

I did this in 2002 with my 72 swinger. Narrowed a truck rear end (8 3/4) to 49" and mini tub the car. Moser does a process called cold splining. The axle is already hardened. It was $95 and shipping was almost as high both ways. A friend did the same thing in his race car. Not such a good idea. Hard hitting big block and a little nos. The axle splines looked like a barber shop pole. I would buy some from Dr Diff. I never had any issues in my car and I started with a 360 and went to a 440 that was about the same as a 69 hp motor. The point is, street ok, race not so ok. Russ
