How do I "unstuck" this dang blessed piece of Mopar Magic??

It just has fits where it thinks I've hit something, and just locks up......won't let me pull it out at all.......

Is this usually a matter of proper lube inside there? Should I use graphite?

It's the 74 Dart Sport............

There is a flipper inside the mechanism that flips down onto the roller to stop the belt from pulling out during an impact, over the years they get a little sticky and can flip down just by pulling the belt out to latch it. I've had a couple apart and haven't seen any lube at all, graphite should work nicely though. If you take the retracting mechanism out of the car it will be very easy to spot the problem. Sometimes you can free them up by pulling slowly/steadily until the belt is all of the way out and letting it retract a few times. I just installed the 75+ belts in my 73 over the weekend and are kind of touchy

i have that same problem in my 74 sport. the passenger side is worst, believe it or not. but i unscrewed the plastic cover on the floor and you can move the latch part outta the way so you can pull the belt out
