Side marker lights

I need to repair the fenders of my 71 Demon just below the side marker lights, they are rusted through about a inch below the cut out for the lights. I was thinking about just patching them in and have no side lights front and back. Has any one done this before? What do you think? I got the idea from a episode of overhauling where filled in the fenders on a 72 challenger.
