Siphon Gas out of a 1971 Demon Gas Tank

I tried to insert a siphon hose I bought from an auto parts store into the tank via the filler tube but it does not want to go in all the way to the tank. There should be about 7 gallons left in the tank and I need to change out the Sending Unit.

When I started to pull out the Sending Unit some gas rolled out so I presume I have to siphon out a few more gallons so the level will drop below the Sending Unit.

I assumed a siphon tube would pass to the tank without any problem but it seems that is not the case. Any idea on what the problem might be ?

Well you can always try and pull off the fuel line from the pickup and attach a hose to it and siphon from there. There is probably a siphon blocker in the filler neck.
