I was researching hypereutectic pistons and this came up. I found it fascinating.
A few interesting facts.
Smog is primarily unburnt fuel.
Unburned fuel comes almost entirely from the little crevice between the piston and cylinder wall above the top ring, around the spark plug threads and head gasket gap.
The middle section gets technical and boring. The conclusion gets interesting again.
It's over 20 years old so I imagine the new alloy is in use.

I always blame the dog for indoor smog.

Definitely interesting research. The higher land creates a better burn rate ceteris parabis. The crevice being hidden from the flame front?

I always blame the dog for indoor smog. That's some FABO Gold right there. :)

We have two house horses (Great Dane and Turkish Kangal) that produce large amounts of indoor smog. I think they need better pistons.
They say the flame does not reach into the crevaces.

I can't imagine the food bill for those two. Let alone the smog :)
