Some 360 engine improvements

-
you are better off getting another 360 somewhere, building it the way you want it as budget allows, then swapping it in when the day comes. that way you can keep riding now and wont be stuck half-done no money no ride no fun thumbin' for a ride or having to catch rides in your friends toyoty just to get to work and back

What do you guys think of this. I was messing around on Cam Quest and got this out of it. I know the numbers are over rated but how close do you guys think this is.

Stock stroke 360

2 valve wedge hp heads/Pocket porting stock valve sizes
2.02 and 1.60 valves
10.5.1 compression

Duel plane high flow intake
75cfm carb

Long tube headers no mufflers

The cam is 20-813-9
RPM range 2500-6200
Hydraulic roller

The numbers

514hp @ 6500
480tq @ 4500

I wouldn't take a lot of stock in that program. I 'm guessing those numbers would be significantly lower in all reality.

You can still get decent numbers out of it. I would take RRR's advice and keep the CR down to around 9.5/1. For a street car on pump swill that would be about right.

I'm collecting parts right now to do a 360, maybe a 408 IF the tooth fairy leaves me a big chunk "o" change. lol

I try to get 400 at the wheels so that about 470 at the crank I read up and found a few people with a 36 build with those numbers but before I build the engine I need to get the rear suspension squared away.

Not close at all, probably at least 40+hp high.

At least compared to the dynos I've been around. I'm sure there are some out there that would have that same deal making 550+

What you currently have should run real close to 108-110 in the 1/4. I'd figure out why it's not running right.

Its a open rear end with 3.55 and not hooking AT ALLLLLLL that's why it running 16.1 at 88 in the 1/4 but with every think I have researched my current engine is about 345hp at the crank.

Even if it was spinning, it should pull like a freight train regardless and put down a decent mph.

Hook has little if anything to do with MPH. Hook is ET, MPH is HP.

345hp at the crank? It's missing at least 50hp with a 508/509 cam. 345hp is a 360, 9.5:1, j heads with a 1.94 valve, comp xe268h with a 750dp. That combo with a 2.94 pegleg 7.25 rear ran almost 105mph in vegas in junk air with a fat tune up and not at full throttle until the 60' mark. Might have run almost 106 with a decent tune, owners just wanted to run it and it repeated three times.

Would it be possible to get 400rwhp out of a stock stroke 360

manual trans and 8 3/4 rear that's about 480hp at crank right?

My 72' 360 had factory flat tops, no reliefs std bore, just a rering back in the late 80's. They were rated at 8.8:1 for 71/72, but were so far down I wouldnt be suprised at how low they actually were. I stuck a windage tray in it, an old 224/[email protected] .460/.450 Crane cam, matching crane single springs w/damper, double roller chain. Heads were stock J heads 1.88/1.6, factory valve job. I gave them a mild port job, i.e. smoothed out the bowls, opened the pinch a littlec flattened the exhaust roof a little, etc, but I stayed conservative. A compression test, done the correct way, showed 142-145 all the way across. MP HD hyd non-adj rockers, 1 5/8 Hedman headers, Edelbrock LD340, 750 dp, 904 with a Turbo Action 2900 stall, and 3.23 gears with a one-legger. Ran 13.61-64 consistent, at 100mph. I shifted at 5500. My 60' sucked with times in the 2.0-2.1 range. It sounded good, would go sideways at 30mph, reliable, and fairly quick. I used it as a daily driver for a while after my divorce.

FWIW, I tried the .508 cam in my 360 once, I get bored and curious. It pulled hard after about 3600, bit it was a pig under that. I even used rhoades lifters with that cam. I ran a 14.3 with 3.91, it was a complete mismatch.

I think if you just make sure everything is sealing the way it should, work the heads a little, and go with a cam similar in size, you will be amazed.

Also, my brother has the same combo I did, but with the original rings, etc. Stock valvesprings, no headwork. He just kinda slapped it together. He has a 75 Dart Sport, 4spd with 3.91s. His 60' was 2.3 or 2.4, he ran 14.1@98.
