Hi everyone:

I have an 833OD behind a 318, all stock. Over the last few months, the transmission started having episodes of refusing to go into 1st or 2nd gear. To clarify, it would be both 1st and 2nd, not one or the other. If it wouldn't go into 1st, it wouldn't go into 2nd either. I don't mean that gears were clashing while trying to get it into gear...it would act like the shifter was hitting a wall. After working the shifter a while, it would go into 1st and 2nd and act normally. 3rd, OD and reverse don't have issues. I conducted an experiment by easing the clutch out while holding the shifter toward 1st with the engine running. No grinding, no going into gear...just like it was blocked out. The trans works fine in every other respect...no grinding, popping out of gear or bearing noises.

I'm not that up on these transmissions and shifters...I think the shifter is a Hurst or a factory copy of a Hurst or a cheapened Hurst...something like that. I plan to pull the trans out in the spring to replace the clutch, so I can address issues then. The clutch is just worn out, not hanging up. Any suggestions for linkage or shifter improvements are appreciated. If this sounds like something internal, I guess I will be pulling it apart.

Thanks.

Is it a ball and detent reverse lever. or does it have a reverse lock built into the side cover. If it has the large nut below the reverse light switch like iin the picture below it is the ball and detent style reverse.

I would say the problem could be in the side cover alignment moving The rear center bolt that holds the cover has a shoulder that goes into the case to keep it aligned. If that shoulder bolt was not installed in that hole the cover could be moving. Aluminum transmissions take longer bolts then the iron transmissions. with lock and flat washers. Just some things to check

Sounds like the strut keys locking the slider somehow.

There is a spring inside the hub with three strut keys that retains the synchro hub. Or something has failed in your shift cover (option one).

The later 833s had a shift cover with some springs in their mechanism and possibly one has broken and jammed your selector in "neutral."
