does anyone have more pics or info on the dusters that Sox and Martin used ?

I know I have one with the 73 style...as well as one with 70/1 tail lights (im assuming its a 71??)

my question is : how many dusters did they build for Sox and Martin cars ....did they all start out as 340 cars? did any of the 71/2 have the sharktooth grille?

did they all have bucket seats? ....did any have the bench seat ......did they all have the standard dash (72+) ?

were the dashes custom or left stock ??

did they have heater and mirror deletes like the S/S 68 darts ?

did Chrysler themselves have anything to do with these cars or did Sox and Martin buy them and take them home and modify at home?

any info is greatly appreciated

wow the article says that people have confused the 71 and 72 duster as the same car ....how in the world does one not notice the different tail lights from 71 and 2 ...there are also soooo many little differences too :banghead:

they were sponsored by chrysler, most of the cars were sent to them as body in white cars, then assembled w/ parts off of stockers and reworked to their liking
their mech. was jake king, (hemi engine guru) sox was about the closest thing to a hero I ever had ----------bob:blob:

Also, it was a pretty standard practice to put new/different grilles and such on cars so you could keep current appearance if you were factory sponsored, without building an entire new car, not to mention some rules stipulate you can only run engine combos that were available in the year of the car (even if it's only the year you claim).

I am really wondering if this is the 70 duster that was destroyed ...as discussed in the article ....notice its a lot different from the other ones in that it is the only one with chrome bumpers ....so im assuming they are steel bumpers.

it is also the only one with a HEMI scoop instead of the aero type on all the other ones.

this is also the only one I have seen with the name "Herb McCandless on the doors

also has unique wheels

I know this is an old thread... but I've always wondered if Sox & Martin built multiple Dusters like their other cars? Or did they just keep updating the original 70 Duster that Herb drove to victory in Indy at the 1970 US Nationals? Personally I thought their Duster(s) looked the best in the 70 configuration. Is it now the surviving 73 Pro Stocker or was it lost to time?

A cool YouTube video of the 70 US Nationals... You can see Herb win the finals at the 24min mark.

As the story goes...... A part I recently bought on Clist supposedly came off a Sox & Martin car which is actually for sale in the Richmond, Va Clist..... I need not give my opinion about the authenticity however you never know... I believe the guy said he is a member on here....

they (sox-martin) had multiple cars of about everything they raced. sometimes they were in two cities at once, w/ a diff driver. they also had clinic cars on tour almost constantly. remember it-them well .

when I moved down to springfield mo area in '05 I remember seeing where at guy here owned at least one of these beasts?? I never see his cars and I don't remember even his name , maybe some research would bring it up. I agree with famousbob about there fleet of cars and being in multiple ciites.
I have mopar buddy that woun d up with a real sox and martin bus, used for parts hauling at one time, it had a bb ford engine in it, he uses it to store parts in. pretty cool.

LOL , could have done w/o the ford part !

A member of our local Mopar car club HPAC owns one of the real 67 "GTX" Sox & Martin cars! It's very impressive to see in person! This car is also featured multiple times in the new Sox & Martin book. It was very fun and informative talking with him this summer about the car and of course Sox & Martin! He definitely knows a lot about the team and the right people to have some answers! I believe his car is one of the two surviving 67 GTX's out of a possible three total being built. If he is at the next cruise night I'll try and ask what he knows about the Dusters!

my 67 belvedere was copied after that car.

Unfortunately I didn't make it to the last cruise night but I will inquire about the Dusters in the spring. I did however find out the fate of the awesome 70 Duster that won the US Nationals. Not the answer I was hoping for...

From the Mopar Pro Stock Facebook page and Herb McCandless son.

Herb McCandless Jr "The truck and car burnt in a head on collision coming home from the world finals, they rented a u haul and put the parts off the car and came home the car was left in AR"
