Spare tire pic ?

-
I'm having the same questions with my spare. I bought a 14 x 5.5" plain steel wheel and put a BFG Radial T/A 215/70-14 on it to match my tires. It sits in the tire well a good 3" above the rest of the trunk floor. I'm not sure if I need to change the tire size or get a different wheel?

A 215 tire is probably about 8-1/2" wide at the tread, so there's no way you'll get it to fit down into a 6" deep spare tire well. That's the problem I've run into - the well is too shallow.

The original spare in my 1970 Dart is a D78-14.
Basically a 205/70-14.

The spare sticking up a little in the well is really no big deal, even the stock spare sticks out a little. The board and matt cover it up just fine.

I believe 69 and earlier cars actually have a smaller tire well.

340 cars would get a E70-14 which would be about the size of a 205-70-14 which doesnt fit in the well either.

That sounds about right. A 205 tire should be approximately 8" tall and would stick up a couple of inches above the 6" well. I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the info.

Hey Adam.
The short stud is for sure 6". Went out and measured it.
In the pic it looks as though the long one is about 1" longer.
So I would say 7".
I would go take the spare apart, but I'm beat. Long day.
