I'm installing a 1984 318 with lock-up 904 into a 65 Barracuda. I bought the "special" speedo cable, that fits the lever shift 904 trans TO the 65 speedometer. All should have been right in the world. but its not.

It turns out that the "special" cable is for the aluminum thread on cable end. The 904 has the plastic speedo drive that has the push through speedo drive cable.

Two questions:
1) can the aluminum speedo drive that fits into the tailshaft be used instead of the plastic 1984 one?
2) are the 904 and 727 drives the same?????

I don't know if the later plastic one interchanges with the aluminum version. You can assemble both and see if the gears line up the same. It seems like they should.

727 and 904 use the same aluminum housing. Naturally, you will need the correct gear. If you need gears, I have a few - [FOR SALE] - 727/904/833 speedometer pinions & related parts

Make sure you "clock" the housings correctly within the tailshaft based on the gear/# of teeth used.
