speedo making noises

not sure if this is the right forum, but...

my speedo recently started doing this crazy bouncing back and forth and making a buzzing/grinding/whirring noise. it's intermittent. it usually starts if i go over a harsh bump at freeway speeds, and stops if i pull to a stop or just beat on the dash long enough.

the sound is definitely coming from in the dash, so could the cable have come loose from the gauge? i've never dealt with this kind of thing before, any advice would be awesome!

Mine did that one time, the cable wasn't all the way engaged into the back of the speedometer. I pulled it out then stuck it back in and it worked fine after that.

The most common advice you'll get is to lube the cable but you should also lube the head. The hex end of the cable fits into a socket that rotates within a bushing. If that socket/bushing goes dry you get that behavior. I have first hand experience and that's what it took to fix it.

Yeah, I lubed my cable and it is still doing this. I will try the speedo head too.

well, pulled the connection at the dash, dab of white lithium grease, jammed it back in, no noise since.
