The speedo stopped working in my Valiant. I pulled the cable from the speedo and it doesn't turn while driving. So I thought broken cable. Unbolted the cable from the tranny and it doesnt seem to be broken, I can spin it by hand. I hooked it back up and the speedo worked for about 100 ft then stopped again. any ideas?

My guess is either the ends of the cable are stripped out, or the back of the speedo is. There's also an off chance that the cable is actually broken, but just grabbed enough resistance to spin a few revolutions before quitting again.

I'd start with a new cable and go from there.

Mine stopped working, and I took it off both sides- it spun fine.
Turns out the inside cable was in too far on the tranny and not into the speedo at all. I just evened it out on both sides and it works fine. How that was able to occur I do not know.

check for a stripped out or apple cored speedo gear inside the tranny.

The problem ended up being the speedo gear spinning around the speedo cable. I put the speedo gear in the vise and gave it a squish, problem solved.
