My best street converter was a high-stall 340 727 converter that I put in my 440 rr. Stalled around three grand, drove nice, probably because of the 4.10 gear (3700 on the freeway)
Best race converter replaced a garbage 4000, with a custom unit built to my car specs, by a small well respected local converter shop. It stalled 5200 behind a 500hp 400 small block.
It picked up 2 1/2 tenths, and 3mph, in the eighth! (The ET improvement was expected, the mph was a surprise)
The single worst hi performance part I've bought in my entire life was a cheap converter. Supposed to be a 3000 stall, stalled above 4200, with about 33% slip. (Yep, a GER).
For a street compromise converter, I'd try to set flash stall a couple hundred rpm less than freeway cruise rpm.
