I'm building a receiver hitch for my car, i was going to use 1.25" x 1.25" square stock. I'm sure this will be plenty strong enough for the load I'll be hauling (under 2000 lbs including trailer ) from what I understand is 4130 has a high shear strength. My question is what is stronger, square stock or laminated flatbar ?

4130 is an alloy so welding is tricky without a preheat and draw oven . Now if you mean by laminated, sheet metal stacked up to get a thickness, than shear strength will be close to a solid but yield strength will be way less, and yield strength is what you need Jim

Take a look at MatWeb.com, this is a materials website. It lists material properties for various materials. 65'

Car already has the hitch, we built it into the bumper/ frame during the resto. Totally hidden. Now in building the actual receiver hitch
