I need to mod my column to fit a big block in my car and found the 2 threads that detail how to eliminate the column shifter in the interior, but they show no detail on how to eliminate the engine compartment side of the shift stuff...

My car -
71 Demon
383 big block/727
Hedman B body headers
Manual steering
column shift auto originally going to a Hurst auto shifter on the floor

(Also found a recent thread that says the sleeve (column shift parts) can be cut off)

So my question is how do/can I remove the column shift rod/sleeve from the engine compartment side of the column so my headers will fit..

I just cut the shift lever off of the shift tube. All of the other related linkage can go bye-bye if using a cable operated shifter. If necessary, you could trim the shift tube back to the bearing/bushing. Could not eliminate the shift tube entirely because other parts are attached to it up top.

Sorry guys, I know this thread is old.
My /6 to 383 swap, I plan on keeping the car (75 Scamp) auto on column. I plan on "trimming" that ringlike portion. The actual lever you removed won't interfere in my application, since the level only moves toward driver's side and at 2 O'clock to 5 O'clock positions.
It's gonna be close...
