Steering Column to Firewall Plate Fitment

74 Dart Sport, factory steering column. When I mock up my install there is a gap as shown in the picture between the column housing and the support bracket. As it's been too long since I tore this apart, is this to be expected or am I missing something? Just making sure the housing isn't supposed to be closer or make contact with the bracket.

I did search but struggled to find pictures of this particular spot for comparison.
 
Your column tube is fubared. It’s not suppose to flair out like that at the lower end. In essence it makes your column to short.
 
Interesting,it was like this when I got it. Makes sense now that I think about it,not being able to find any pics that look like it.

Aside from cosmetic, are there any functional concerns?

I suppose I'll start looking for options to replace or maybe an upgrade...
 
It is designed to do that in event of a front end collision. You may be able to disassemble it and reshape your tube. It is suppose to be round just like the tube is above it. Then that short section just below it is held on to the tube with three rivets.
