Steering freezes

Hi, I have a problem with my power steering.When I turn the wheels ether way out and want to start turning back, then the steering just freezes for a sec.It unfreezes just before I hit a curb.Its been to many close calls, so I really don't want to drive anymore.

What might be the problem? Steering box or pump?

I would say box. Mine does it too sometimes. I am getting ready to change out my steering box and pump.

check valve in PS pump can cause that as well...

My vote would be not normal, probably worn bearings or bushings, IMO.

Can I change the pump to another one, if i use the existing bracket? Another one like later model or a different brand car?
