Steering wheel cleaning

Even after I clean the steering wheel in my 68 dart it still feels dirty. Is there any way I can clean and protect the wheel so it doesn't feel gross!!When I rub the wheel I still get dirt almost balling up if you know what I mean.

I just used simple green full strength to remove that build up,and several clean rags. Nasty !

Before photo didn't look bad but it was caked.You can still see some at the top of the photo. Took several tries but all came clean.

After trying several products on my customers Vett. I tried a product called DSR-5. silicone & adhesive remover. It worked great, easy, 2 applications and left no residual trace behind.

I use hand cleaner followed up by a wet rag.

Is it possible that the plastic is breaking down & deteriorating ?? Maybe clean it really well with a mild cleanser & then seal it somehow.....
