Welp, I have really went off the deep end now, bought a old superflow 901 dyno setup, plan is to update with newer control and data acquisition electronics. Should be quite a learning adventure

Well......it matches the flow bench, lol. If I remember right, the flow bench was hooked to Ben's dyno...so take a peek at it before you buy updated software and see if it will hook up. Ben has several sets of dyno headers left if you need some. Mostly Ford stuff, and a BB Chevy set for sure. No Mopar headers. My dyno session was BYOH, lol.

The flowbench doesn't have anything to do with the engine dyno, and this thing came with a truckload of headers, on top of the truckload I have allready!
 
Nice! I had a 351 “Clevor” engine tested once back in the early 90’s, but I didn’t have to bring headers. Only thing I needed was the engine, and a 10” (I think) Chevy clutch disc.
 
Congrats. I think that is the same type of dyno my engine was tested on.

Bet your business doubles. There is a huge comfort level in getting an engine upgraded, broke in and tuned not to mention a dyno sheet.. Ready to drop in is worth serious dollars to a lot of people. For extra bonus points video the dyno run. Worth a lot to you and the customer!!!

Im happy and excited for you.

Hopefully you got the pumps with it. You can’t really get the pumps too big. The pumps that came with my dyno wouldn’t run a sprinkler system. They were too small so it was little wonder the gu was having issues.

Keep us updated. This is SO COOL!

Also, I had to modify my dyno so it would take about any header. Before I did it way too many headers wouldn’t fit. But your dyno stand looks different than mine. Im not sure which is older but I suspect it’s mine. Which means your stand may not need to be modified.

His software is so easy to use it’s simple for me. And I detest computers and that crap like that. And, he just released a new controller that is absolutely fantastic. It is butter smooth, loads easy (when the engine is happy, an unhappy engine doesnt load well) and it repeats like crazy.

It’s bigger and beefier than his last iteration. And his customer survive is unparalleled in the business.

Just my .02 on that.

Thanks! Yeah, got the complete setup, including a 1000+ gallon water tank, 2 pumps, big ones, (I think 5HP 3 phase). The room exhaust fan, ducting, and a really nice muffler setup, plus a large amount of headers, lots with the thermocouple bungs allready installed

That’s awesome. I don’t think you will regret buying it.

It will change your learning curve exponentially because YOU own it and you can test what you want.

It will drive customers to you who have their engines built by someone else and they can change their mains and just have you do the whole engine.

The only downside I can see is you will get more business. You have to sleep sometime lol. Other than that Im frigging PUMPED you pulled the trigger. Just fantastic.

I'm pretty careful about picking and choosing my work, and I do ZERO advertising, but honestly a lot of my machine work is for other local engine builders, but it can go from almost caught up, (like when I went to pick up the dyno the other day) to 4 full builds like now. Now i have a gen 1 392 Blown Hemi, a gen 5 5.3LT Chevy, and 2 jeep/amc 4.0 strokers. Not complaining however!
 
Congratulations. I think it’s a benefit to any engine builder / machinist to have one. If you have any setup, installation, or software issues I’m close to westech and I can take pics, or ask about their setup.

I believe my dyno is about 1991ish but I know it has the 833 absorber. Im pretty sure his is newer than that.

Saying that, does that stand look like it will have header fitment issues? On mine, there were two legs that support the absorber that were vertical and too far outboard.

I used some round tube and moved the bottom in as far as I could and I haven’t found a head that won’t fit.

Yet lol.
 
Here’s a pic of my motor on Ben’s dyno that shows his cart. My swap meet Hooker headers fit ok, but he was worried they would be too narrow.

I have what's probably a dumb dyno question. How do dyno owner/operators calibrate the dyno itself? My understanding is that instruments of measurement have to calibrated with a 'standard' of some sort. Is that done with dynos too? If so, what is used as the standard?

**EDIT** Never mind. I googled it. Seems like a pretty simple concept really.

There is an arm you bolt to the absorber and then add weight to it. Then the software does the rest.

I can’t think of how many times I’ve calibrated mine and Ive yet to find it off.

Sometimes I do it just because I feel guilty I haven’t checked it.

I have yet to determine what my stand is exactly. I've never seen another 901 with a docking cart setup like this one. I almost think its something someone built, but it sure looks factory built.

You have probably figured it out by now, but the load cell, or "strain gauge" is calibrated by bolting a bar to the absorber, with a certain amount of weight, at a certain length on the bar. Then when your actually making a pull, the electronics in the weather station read temp, humidity, barometric pressure, and in conjunction with a few other things, it does the mathematical "correction" to whatever SAE factor you choose.

Thanks. Yep, that's basically what I read. Plus veriying that rpm is read accurately.

I was having dinner with Troy from westech tonight when I read that. He said they use Schoenfeld sprint car headers on just about everything and almost every other header needs to be modified to fit the stand.

I don’t know what carts they use but here’s a few pics of the big block from my boat on the dyno. We had to make the turbo dumps to fit the dyno.
