This morning the ammeter needle in my '73 Dart started oscillating back and forth. It trys to respond like it always does, reading higher at rpm and lower at idle, but seems to jump high to low and back within say a 1/4" range. It does this somewhat slowly at idle, but becomes rapid as the rpm increases. It's never done this before...ever! Otherwise, the car still runs fine.

Could this be a bad voltage regulator (mine is electronic)? The battery reads about 13.8 volts at idle. The regulator looks old, and was on the car before I got it. But it's never done this before. What else would cause this pulsing of the ammeter?
Thanks for responses!

I had the same thing happen and it was the voltage regulator. It was an electronic unit made by MP. I replaced it with an aftermarket electronic. No problems since.
