How do you tell if you have a cone type or clutch type? It's off the car and laying in the shop. The repair manual says the clutch type case bolts together. What about the cone type. This one has 2 openings where there are 2 springs on each side.

489 case and it has a 1969 gear set in it.

In addition to what was posted.

A clutch style bolts together opposite side of ring gear and is pretty constant diameter.

Cone has a set of bolt holding two halves together on same side as ring gear, just inside the ring gear bolts. The carrier also has a barrel type shape, narrowing moving away from the ring gear.

That's what I have a cone type. I don't know it's history so I'm wondering to put it in or buy a tru trac or whatever along with some 4.30 gears.

I'd at least pop it apart and have a look at the cones to see if their bottomed out. It'd be a pita to put it in and only spin one wheel.
