They certainly do use lifters or more appropriately tappets. They are somewhat similar to a Briggs and Stratton tappet.

The 24 valve Cummins has lifters. Known as tappets in the diesel world. Just like the pushrods are called push tubes. I could go in but u get the picture. Kim

big cam cummins has cam followers, boxes that mount to side of block with roller tappets swinging off them setting on cam lobes....advance or retard cam by gasket thickness!
