T-56,Bench Seat

Has anyone put a T-56 in your A-Body and kept the bench seat. If so did you use the front or rear location for the shifter. Rear seems to work but would require just a straight shift handle as opposed to something that I would be more used to.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
