Older guy at church, a Chevy man to the core, tells me he has an 8.75 in the back of his garage to give me. He does not remember what it came out of and says it's been laying been laying under the bench for a couple of decades. He's tired of looking at it. I'm making a lunchtime run tomorrow. Stay tuned.......

If only you were going on Saturday, I could tell you exactly what this is

Alright. The mystery rear is home. I believe what we have here is a 65-70 B body rear. With the 2.94 gears and left hand threads on the left side, I'm guessing 65-67. Center section is a 741 case, coarse spline pinion. Looks like it was laying in thw junkyard for 15 years before Joe took it home and put I side 10 years ago.
Perches are 44 on center, and I believe if I could get flange to flange, I'd be at 54.25.

If the 741 is original o the axle, that limits the years

IIRC mid 68-mid 69-ish.

Nice! Yeah, based on the difficulty in measuring a rear axle housing like that with the backing plates on I’d be willing to bet that you’ve got a 65-67 B-body 8 3/4 there

Since we already have an 8.75 in Jake's 65, my 68 and Josh's 73, one day soon, I'll knock the backing plates off to confirm the flange_flange measurement , do a little cleaning, and probably offer it up for sale or trade as I generate funds for Josh's 73 Sport build.

Sounds like a good plan! It would make a great rear end for a Duster/Demon/Dart Sport or Barracuda

Sorry, misread as 742, so yeah, if the 741 was born on that housing, it's mid year 68 or older IIRC.

So I knocked the axles and backing plates out of the way this afternoon and got an accurate flange-flange measurement of 54.25 inches. Confirms it is a 65-67 B body rear.

I picked one of those 65-67 housings up to use in my 73 Cuda with 1” offset shackles. Going from 46 to 44 inch spring spacing gives an extra inch of clearance for wider tires on an E-body without cutting or welding anything. There is a good market for them. The later ones work too but have slightly different flange width.
