Okla. Woman Shoots, Kills Intruder: 911 Operators Say It's Okay to Shoot

A young Oklahoma mother shot and killed an intruder to protect her 3-month-old baby on New Year's Eve, less than a week after the baby's father died of cancer.

Sarah McKinley says that a week earlier a man named Justin Martin dropped by on the day of her husband's funeral, claiming that he was a neighbor who wanted to say hello. The 18-year-old Oklahoma City area woman did not let him into her home that day.

On New Year's Eve Martin returned with another man, Dustin Stewart, and this time was armed with a 12-inch hunting knife. The two soon began trying to break into McKinley's home.

As one of the men was going from door to door outside her home trying to gain entry, McKinley called 911 and grabbed her 12-gauge shotgun.

McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO that she quickly got her 12 gauge, went into her bedroom and got a pistol, put the bottle in the baby's mouth and called 911.

"I've got two guns in my hand -- is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door?" the young mother asked the 911 dispatcher. "I'm here by myself with my infant baby, can I please get a dispatcher out here immediately?"

The 911 dispatcher confirmed with McKinley that the doors to her home were locked as she asked again if it was okay to shoot the intruder if he were to come through her door.

"I can't tell you that you can do that but you do what you have to do to protect your baby," the dispatcher told her. McKinley was on the phone with 911 for a total of 21 minutes.

When Martin kicked in the door and came after her with the knife, the teen mom shot and killed the 24-year-old. Police are calling the shooting justified.

"You're allowed to shoot an unauthorized person that is in your home. The law provides you the remedy, and sanctions the use of deadly force," Det. Dan Huff of the Blanchard police said.

Stewart soon turned himself in to police.

McKinley said that she was at home alone with her newborn that night because her husband just died of cancer on Christmas Day.

"I wouldn't have done it, but it was my son," McKinley told ABC News Oklahoma City affiliate KOCO. "It's not an easy decision to make, but it was either going to be him or my son. And it wasn't going to be my son. There's nothing more dangerous than a woman with a child."

make my day ... punk , couldnt have said it any better myself... its 100% legal here in CO.

Awesome! She only did 1/2 the job shoulda killed the other arsehole! They new dad died and showed up to rob them, scum!!

all the power to her, Cindy would have done the same thing.I have 2 baseball batssss 1 down stars and 1 in our bedroom,if I have to play ball I will.way to go girl.

LOL...... This is the part I love.

"She quickly got her 12 gauge, went into her bedroom and got a pistol, put the bottle in the baby's mouth and called 911."

Way to go!!! I love it! This should happen more often to send a message to all the lowlifes out there that think the world is theirs to rob and mame! Sounds like her deceased husband may have taught her well about handling guns and she did a mighty fine job! 2 thumbs up!

Smart young lady when she put the bottle in the baby's mouth to keep him quiet. She saved the Oklahoma tax payers some money when she killed Martin.

This kind of story makes you feel warm all over.

What scum would do that to a single mom? Good to here they got what was coming to them. Ball licking FUC@KTARDS!

X2!!

She has gone though enough pain, hope this doesn't affect her too.

I will have to say it will affect her in a big way. Having those 2 idiots I would say she will be very distrustful of men for a long time.

Cudo's to her! I hope she said "Happy New Year" to him first!

Absolutely justified. Way to go !! I have encouraged my wife to take a class and learn to handle our guns in the off chance she ever needs to. The safety of my family takes priority and the gun class stresses safe gun handling practices as well as how to defend yourself.

Of course the shooting range in fun too !!

The title should read
Nothing more dangerous than a mother protecting her child
and I agree completely. I just hope if that ever happens here RCW will protect us.

Good job. Any scum that knows that her husband just died and decides to try and attack her or her child deserves to be dead.

Can you even imagine that there really ARE states and countries where she would be locked up for doing this????? It just blows my mind that governments have taken away this most basic right of human self defense in some places....... :(

Posted this story up on FB yesterday- what bugs me is that the article is titled "Operator Okays Shooting Intruder," when in reality the operator was saying 'I can't tell you what to do." The anti-gun people will point to that (w/o reading the whole article or piece mealing it) as to how wrong it is to own a gun.
Glad this momma popped the a-hole, I admire that she said "It was a hard thing to do, but I have to protect my baby." You go on, momma!

I posted the article on facebook with the caption "There are too many guns out there. What is this world coming to when you can't stalk and stab a young woman without getting shot."

am I the only person who thinks she was completely wrong???

Nope- I'm one of the people who thinks 'good for her':thumbrig:
